Welcome to a brand new journey on ZedaTek – Your Source for Tech Intelligence.
I am incredibly excited to announce the launch of my new podcast series, “The Face Behind the Call Sign”. This series is bridging the gap between the technology world and the fascinating, ever-evolving universe of Amateur (Ham) Radio.
Our goal is simple: to bring you the stories, struggles, and triumphs of the people behind the call signs, starting with our very own home-grown heroes from the Indian subcontinent.
Episode 01: The Art of CW and Overcoming the Fear of the First QSO
For our inaugural episode, I had the absolute pleasure of hosting Punit, VU2TUM. Punit is not just a Ham Radio operator; he is a passionate advocate for the hobby, a CW (Morse Code) enthusiast, and someone who has successfully blended his love for radio with his professional and personal life.

What We Discussed
In this candid conversation, Punit takes us through his unique entry into the hobby which surprisingly started on an aquarium forum! Puneet also dives deep into the technical and practical aspects of being a Ham today.
Here are some of the key takeaways from our chat:
1. The Magic of Morse Code (CW):
Punit shares his journey into CW (Continuous Wave), dispelling the myth that it’s a dying art. We talk about the SKCC (Straight Key Century Club) and why there is a unique satisfaction in using mechanical keys like straight keys and bugs over modern digital modes. If you’ve ever felt intimidated by Morse Code, Punit’s advice on using “training wheels” and tools like Reverse Beacon Network (RBN) will change your perspective.
2. Breaking the “Mic Fright”
One of the most relatable moments in the episode is Punit recounting his very first QSO (contact) where he froze while exchanging call signs. It happens to the best of us! His message to newcomers is powerful: “Nobody is going to land in a hospital if you goof up on the air.” The community is supportive, and making mistakes is just part of the learning process.
3. Ham Radio is for Everyone
We discuss how the hobby has evolved. You no longer need to build everything from scratch (though you can if you want!). With accessible kits like the QCX Mini or TruSDX, getting on the air is more affordable than ever. We also touch upon POTA (Parks on the Air) and how you can operate a station from your car or a park bench, making the hobby compatible with a travel-loving lifestyle.
4. The Face Behind VU2TUM
Beyond the radio, we get to know Punit who is also a biomedical engineer turned supply chain professional who travels the world with his wife, Neha (VU2HUM) (yes, she’s a Ham too!). Their story is a testament to how Ham Radio can be a shared passion that enriches your life experiences.
Why You Should Listen
Whether you are a seasoned “Old Man” (OM), a “Young Lady” (YL) in the hobby, or a curious newcomer wondering what those beeps and squeaks are all about, this episode is packed with value. It’s not just about the technicalities; it’s about the community, the camaraderie, and the thrill of making a connection across the globe using nothing but a wire and your skills.
